Firoz Shah Kotla: Where History Meets the Legend of the jinns

Delhi is a city where history lives in every corner-but some places carry not only history, but also mystery. One such fascinating site is Firoz Shah Kotla Fort.
Built in the 14th century by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq, this fort is an architectural marvel. However, today it is equally known for something unusual-beliefs surrounding Jinns (spirits).
According to local stories, since around the 1970s, people have believed that a Jinn resides within the ruins of the fort, especially near the mosque area. It is said that this spirit comes every Friday to listen to people’s wishes. As a result, visitors often come on Thursday evenings, leaving behind handwritten letters describing their problems and desires.
Many also tie locks in the परिसर, believing that they are symbolically locking their problems away, trusting the Jinn to resolve them. Whether one believes these stories or not, the atmosphere during these visits is truly unique and deeply rooted in faith.
From a historian’s perspective, however, Firoz Shah Kotla is far more than myths. It is a remarkable example of Tughlaq architecture-massive stone structures, simplicity in design, and a strong sense of purpose.
I first visited this fort in 1997. At that time, it was not well maintained, and entry systems were quite basic. Recently, I visited again after many years, and the transformation is impressive. The site is now well preserved under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, with proper boundaries, security, and organized access. welcoming both history enthusiasts and believers in the Jinn legend.
Architectural Highlights
The Royal Mosque
Within the fort complex stands the remains of the royal mosque. Though much of it has crumbled, the walls and arches still echo the prayers of centuries past. Even today, local Muslims visit the site for worship, maintaining a spiritual connection that has endured through generations.
The Baoli
One of the most remarkable features of Firoz Shah Kotla is its circular Baoli (stepwell), built in 1354 to provide drinking water and a cool retreat from Delhi’s scorching heat. Unlike most stepwells in India, which are rectangular, this one is round in shape—a rare architectural design. Though entry inside is now restricted for safety reasons, visitors can still admire its unique structure from above.
The Ashoka Pillar
Another highlight is the ancient Ashoka Pillar, originally erected in the 3rd century BC by Emperor Ashoka in Topra (modern-day Haryana). Firoz Shah Tughlaq had the pillar transported to Delhi in the 14th century—a remarkable engineering feat for its time. The pillar, inscribed in Brahmi script, stands as a testament to India’s layered history, linking the Mauryan and Tughlaq eras. Locals often refer to it as the “Lathi of Jhin Baba,” blending myth with history in a way only Delhi can.

The fort is now well maintained by the ASI, with proper boundary walls, security guards, and separate entry lines for Indian and foreign visitors.
A Personal Reflection
My first visit to Firoz Shah Kotla was in 1997. Back then, the site was poorly managed, with minimal security and limited visitor facilities. Yet even in its neglected state, the fort’s aura was captivating.
When I revisited recently, I was delighted to see the transformation. The Archaeological Survey of India has done commendable work in preserving and maintaining the monument. The lawns are trimmed, pathways are clean, and the fort feels alive again—welcoming both history enthusiasts and believers in the Djinn legend.
